I can realize that this seems like a very extreme title. And no one can really believe that Obama wants a death panel. But lets look at the other side.
What is an insurance company? A business out to make money… If an insurance company wanted to start implementing a review with its customers about “end of life” treatment what would be the out cry then? Wouldn’t the insurance companies be villainized even more than they are… Wouldn’t everyone believe they would push their clients who are costing them money, towards lower cost options? What are lower cost options? Less treatment? What exactly…
So if the government has its own insurance program, won’t they have the same issues to cut costs? Aren’t Medicare and Social Security broke? So wouldn’t they want to reduce cost too? So if they had a review with clients just like the insurance company, would they not want to save money?
So even if Death Panel is over the top title, what is this review really? Do we need it? Don’t people who are facing life ending illnesses discussing options with their doctor now? So is this really something that needs fixed?
